DER FALL TELLKAMP - STREIT UM DIE MEINUNGSFREIHEIT
Feature TV-Documentary · 89 mins · German (OV) · 2022
"Readers and feature pages have been waiting a long time for it, and now it's here: Uwe Tellkamp's new novel "Der Schlaf in den Uhren" is being published by Suhrkamp. There has been a lot of speculation in recent years, including whether the publisher still stands by its award-winning author. The differences seemed too great since Tellkamp positioned himself against Islamic immigration in 2018 and faced massive public criticism. Director Andreas Gräfenstein worked on this film for more than two years. He has lived in Dresden himself, knows places and people involved. His film is an attempt to overcome the speechlessness in the debate beyond the politically extreme."

AN IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT
Feature Documentary · 93 mins · English (OV) · 2020
„How often do you look at your phone? Can you even stop? Are you, too, suffering from digital overload? Director Jens Meurer's film 'An Impossible Project' sets out to offer us alternative distractions, and to learn to trust our senses once more.
In 2008, as we were all salivating over our first iPhone, an eccentric former biologist, Dr. Florian Kaps - better known as 'Doc' - had a strange calling. He decided to save the last Polaroid factory in the world, in Enschede in the Netherlands. At first the venture failed miserably. But the Doc never gives up and what follows is a heart-warming and inspiring trip into the new power of analogue - taking him to one of the unlikeliest places of all: Silicon Valley.
Shot on analogue 35mm film (of course), the original soundtrack was recorded direct-to-disc by a 40-piece jazz orchestra with the sensational Haley Reinhart on vocals and the titles hand-printed by Erik Spiekermann. 'An Impossible Project' is rich in curiosity and good humour, celebrating the potent and lasting connections between humans and technology, and serving as a timely reminder that not only are we all unique, but humans are the most analogue project of all."

100 years of ARRI
In 2017 ARRI was celebrating their 100th anniversary and asked a series of filmmakers about their art, their techniques and of course their relations to the tools and partnership with ARRI. I was happy to edit 16 episodes of this series, directed by Jens Meurer who interviewed a lot of interesting and famous filmmakers like Wim Wenders, Tom Tykwer, Edgar Reitz and Katja von Garnier as well as the producer Stefan Arndt, the camera women Bella Halben and Judith Kaufmann or the film restorer Davide Pozzi. Watch two of the most inspiring episodes below or click the button to find the whole series at Arri's official 100 years anniversary site.

DER PALAST - DIE DOKUMENTATION
TV-Documentary · 43 mins · German (OV) · 2021
"Andreas Gräfenstein tells the breathtaking story of this entertainment temple, which stretches from the Weimar Republic to the present day. Stars also performed in the palace during GDR times, earning it the reputation of a "Las Vegas of the East. The accompanying documentary tells what went on behind the scenes of the show stage in the last years of the GDR. How freely could the artists work? What privileges did they have? How was the great revue tradition of the Friedrichstadtpalast written on?"

THE SOCIAL EXPERIMENT
Thriller, Sci-Fi, Drama · 97 mins · German (OV) · 2022
„The Social Experiment" is about a group of young people who are lured into a supposed "Escape Room" adventure by a competition. In fact, however, it is a behavioral analysis experiment. The experiment is conducted by two scientists. In order to be able to tailor the games exactly to the strengths, weaknesses and characteristics of the participants, they have programmed an AI. This starts to play the participants off against each other and confront them with their deepest fears. The friendship is put to the test. A fight to the death begins. Everyone has to question themselves and their beliefs and choose a side. Central themes of the thriller are friendship, manipulation and social media."

"In one of the first virtual productions in Germany, Hamburg-based first-time director Pascal Schröder, producer Andreas Schlieter and DoP Daniel Schua have been exploring the opportunities of virtual production. Inspired by Disney’s The Mandalorian series, they have been shooting their first feature, The Social Experiment, in a newly opened LED studio in Hamburg. “The great advantage of this technology is that there are no limits,” says Schröder. “It is possible to put any set that you can imagine on screen.” Together with scriptwriter Raffaela Kraus, he developed the idea for a story about an escape game, as it gave them utter freedom in terms of style."

November 1989 at the inner-German border. The regime-loyal GDR border guard Rudi and his system-weary comrade Frank observe potential border violators. „It's Annika's birthday. Instead of throwing a party she has invited only her unsuspecting work colleague Niko, in addition to her best friend Max, in a misguided advance. No one is actually having any fun. What unfolds here is far more than just an unpleasant situation. Long and carefully built up resentments make their way to the surface and a breach of trust finally ensures that the evening takes a grotesque turn.“

HITHER AND THITHER (and more)
Contemporary Dance by Julia Maria Koch · 2015-2017
„'Hither and Thither‘ is a dance-piece in two acts and a prelude and mirrors the act-order of the famous romantic ballets which dedicate the first act to life and the second act to the “other side”. The prelude refers to the "divertissement" in the romantic opera lyrique and gives an absurd preview to what follows in the next two acts. The first act deals with different life-stories, touching the big timeless issues of human relationships like love, power, guilt, cruelty. The characters are inspired in romantic heroes from literature, ballet and also contemporary identities, who all experience a tragic turnaround of their story, which makes them connect with another realm or shifts their awareness. The second act shows the same characters in an otherworldly setting, where the stories start to dissolve and the former individuality melts into sameness, physical formality into de-composition and strong visual suggestions. By the end dissolution offers the resolution and leaves us with the unsettling question of our legacy.“

Concept JULIA MARIA KOCH
In fact 'Hither and Thither' was just the first of a series of dance choreographies by Julia Maria Koch, produced by Torsten Lippstock. We created a warm and inspiring working relationship which led us to new projects like 'Charon', 'zenit_nadir' and 'Deals with God'. I still benefit from the experience I gained during this collaboration with a choreographer. When it comes to movement, expression and unflattering attitudes, you learn a lot from dance...
